While in line at Starbucks, I overheard two elderly gentlemen discussing technology. The conversation revolved around their general lack of knowledge regarding the latest gadgets, specifically, how one gentleman couldn't figure out "those damn computers." I chuckled at the comment and was reminded of my grandmothers, neither of which have ever used a computer. Although neither of my grandmothers have any desire to use a computer and have never been on the internet, I wondered if they were really missing anything.
Most people will agree that there is a lot of junk on the internet. The web is filled with sites dedicated to topics of interest only the designer would ever care to read about. Furthermore, people are now spending an exorbitant part of their lives facebooking, posting, and blogging, often about nothing. We log on, and three hours later wonder where the time went.
On the other hand, today's computers are technological marvels. With a computer and an internet connection, the world and a wealth of information is at your fingertips. Computers and the internet have, whether we like it or not, become an inescapable part of our lives.
We are therefore left with only two options, fail to keep up with the latest technological developments and have conversations with similarly suited peers about "that damn Twitter," or we can embrace the future and start Tweeting. I (rjut4life) finally did.
